In 1787, Philip Gidley King, a Launceston man, sailed as 2nd Lieutenant of HMS Sirius  which accompanied the first fleet of convicts sent to Australia. He became the third Governor of New South Wales.

An exhibition tells the fascinating stories of the convicts and our sister town of Launceston, Tasmania, a reminder of the Cornish connection on the other side of the world.

The watercolour by WH Charpentier shows Launceston Museum, Tasmania circa 1895
